In a decade dominated by social media’s lessons on tech power, let’s remember: AI’s impact goes beyond concerns. It’s a force for lasting good, poised to create a legacy of change for generations.
Artificial intelligence (AI) isn’t a silver bullet, but its power extends beyond profits. It can serve as a megaphone for the unheard and as a platform for change for the ‘Unspecials’ – those who have been marginalized until now by education, race, age, or their place of birth.
Here are some inspiring examples of AI’s positive impact:
- Empowering People with Disabilities: Huawei‘s AI innovations like ‘StorySign’ help deaf children read by translating text to sign language. Tools like ‘Track.Ai’ identify visual disorders in kids, and ‘Facing Emotions’ translates emotions into sounds, helping the blind “see” emotions.
- Fighting Hunger: AI’s data-crunching prowess: a weapon against global hunger, predicting shortages, optimizing yield, and sowing the seeds of food security.
- Tackling Inequality and Poverty: AI holds biases, but it’s also a bias-buster. Tools like ‘Aequitas’ and ‘AI Fairness 360’ counteract bias, while ‘Textio’ fosters inclusive job descriptions. AI even evaluates street images to spot inequality, driving tangible change.
- Combating Disinformation: Google, Microsoft, and grassroots efforts are using AI to sift through fake news, while social media giants use AI to spot patterns. Tools like ‘Spike’, ‘Snopes’, and ‘Hoaxy’ further aid content analysis.
- Enhancing Medical Diagnosis: Siemens Healthineers integrates AI into medical tech, boosting routine tasks and diagnostic accuracy, paving the path for cost-cutting and more accessible care.
- Improving Access to Healthcare: AI’s deep-learning skills shine in healthcare, identifying diseases like cancers, while expanding access to better medical support in underserved communities. Companies like Previneo in Brazil, are democratizing health prevention and improving diagnostics.
- Conserving Wildlife: AI is contributing to conservation by analyzing data inexpensively. Universities employ AI to detect bird collisions, track endangered species, and identify creatures through uploaded images, bolstering global wildlife preservation.
- Environmental Challenges: Initiatives like ‘The Rainforest Connection’ use AI tools for conservation worldwide. Other initiatives like ‘The World Bee Project’, in partnership with Oracle, are using AI to save bees – believe or not, crucial for our planet’s health.
As you can see, collaboration, a shared vision, and bold leadership pave the way, turning possibilities into realities that enrich us all. And there is a path to start:
- Map AI use cases that align with your core values (e.g., crisis response, economic empowerment, equality and inclusion, health and hunger, trust and safety, etc.).
- Align AI capabilities with your present and future potential (e.g., computer vision, natural-language processing, speech and audio processing, etc.).
- Plan to overcome obstacles (particularly regarding talent, but also data)
- Address and manage risks (e.g., trust and safety, bias, etc.).
- Prepare to scale up the use of AI for good (e.g., AI boot camps, AI residencies, partnerships, improved data accessibility, etc.).
Let’s turn the potential of AI for good into a powerful reality, extending a helping hand to the ‘unspecial’ places, communities, and people who need support to forge a brighter path towards a better tomorrow.
